Silver medalist Mom's Choice Awards 2010. "Action-packed and abounding with quirky, likable characters, this small gem has the power to keep readers entranced." Following on the heels of her bestselling first novel, THE GLASS TABLE, Leigh K Cunningham has penned an entertaining, insightful sequel for young readers. When Shards picks up the story, brainy Ming Zhi Chen has arrived home after escaping the witch's spell that transformed her and eleven others into spirits to live in the river Kai. Ming's flight to freedom came at a high price, and she is determined to do whatever she can to free the children she left behind. To break the spell and defeat the witch, she enlists the help of Sarah Gibson, a local journalist who shares Ming's incredible story with the townsfolk of Rumpole ... with unexpected results. Meanwhile, the child spirits continue their struggles against each other and developers who threaten the ecosystem of their river home. Continuing the environmental theme of protecting freshwater lakes and rivers, Shards is a captivating story that will leave young readers anxiously anticipating the next installment in this exciting series.

Books reviews

While Shards , the continuation of Leigh K. Cunningham's The Glass Table series, does offer a conclusion of the continuing problem twelve children face after they are caught up in a magical spell and forced to live as spirits on the bottom of the river Kai. It is absolutely necessary to read both books in the series if you want to know what has happened previously as well as the outcome of their situation. I felt the story lines improved greatly from the first book. The story kept the reader engaged throughout every twist and turn. However, at the very end of the book there seems to be an unexpected "bond" forced between the children, as well as some new unanswered questions. It seems the author has left the story open for another continuation or, at any rate, Shards leaves the reader guessing.

Last year I picked up a copy of "The Glass Table" by Leigh K Cunningham. I really enjoyed it. I'm certainly no kid but it still roped me in. So when I saw the sequel had been released, "Shards" I pressed the shop button on my kindle and started reading straight away. From the first page I was hooked, I found myself transported to lake como on the wings of an eagle. From there the book gallops along and takes you on a fine imaginative journey.

There is a slightly darker edge to this book, due to the fact that you spend a little more time with the witch. You get to know all the characters a little better adding more depth to the story. If you are looking for a good read for the savvy reader in your household, or for yourself then this book is for you. It's clever and relevant to our time. I loved it.
